What's happening in the WCKA and our club, WCKA Gorseinon and Killay ?

Interclub Grand Prix 2010 - Event 1 - Swansea

A superb event - the largest interclub ever with a strong contingent from our club.

We achieved 10 first places, 7 second places, 7 third places and  4 medal positions.

Thanks to fighters, coaches, helpers and supporters who helped make the day a fabulous success.

WCKA Supergrade - Sunday 13th December

A fabulous day at the Supergrade which sees all the clubs across the WCKA grade together just once a year.  Once again the club obtained  an excellent number of distinctions with all members doing themselves and me proud.  The Day was capped by WCKA Gorseinon and Killay being named "Club of the Year"

World Championships - Huelva, Spain October 27th - November 3rd

5 memebrs of the club represented Wales at the WKA World Karate and Kickboxing Championships and between them returned with 4 Bronze medals.  The Welsh Team of over 40 fighters had great success at the championships with 11 Gold Medals, 14 Silver and 24 Bronze.  Well done to Amy, Daniel, Emma and Thomas.

CIMAC World Cup - Maidenhead - Sunday12th July 2009

The WCKA took a very strong team to this prestigious competition, and WCKA G&K contributed 7 members.  Cameron Griffiths continued his excellent progress but couldn't quite reach the semi finals, with Emma John succumbing to the eventual winner in her category, Amy Huxtable losing to an outstanding German competitor, Daniel Huxtable losing 3-2 in his quarter final after beating the highly ranked Jordan Brace in the previous round and David Huxtable losing his quaarter final battle with multi world Champion Dave Maddocks 7-3.

Megan Evans, fighting in the same category as Emma won her quarter final match convincingly only to lose to the twin sister of the winner, in the Semi Final - Megan Earning a bronze medal for her excellent efforts.  Finally, Thomas Jones who was on top form throughout the tournament eased himself into the final with a convincing win in teh semi finals but met muchstiffer opposition in the final.  After two 90 second rounds the scores were tied at 14-14, a fabulous fight had taken place with the momentum changing direction many times.  Thomas knew what he had to do.  Whoever wanted it most would take the title - World Cup Winner.  Overtime startered 30 seconds to take the title - within 10 seconds we knew Tom had it - two head kicks took him 4 points clear, and he didn't ease up - his opponent tried to come back but Thomas was too strong.  Well done Thomas, you and all the other fighters did the club proud.

Quarterly Grading - Sunday 21st June 2009

77 of our students took their next belts between the lil dragon grading on the previous Thursday taken by Mr Parker of the Penlan club, and the Kidzone and Main grade students on the above date.

An outstanding performance by all students resulting in 38 passing with distinction, 36 receiving a pass plus 3 receiving a pass and no failiures.  Our best results ever with positive comments received from each of the examiners grading our students.

Well done to you all - I am very proud.

WKA 5 Nations Open - Birmingham - Sunday 17th May 2009

A team of 6 fighters travelled to this event from WCKA Gorseinon and Killay as part of a large team across the whole of the WCKA.  Mr Huxtable won the Mens +89KG black belt category with his son also winning his category, Juniors -145cm black belt.  Thomas Jones fought superbly to take second place in the Junior Boy intermediate + 155cm category and Emma John had yet another good tournament taking third place, despite a nose bleed in the Junior Girl Intermediate -155cm.

Both Megan Evans and Cameron Griffiths fought very well and both narrowly missed out on a third place.  Megan had to fight in the black belt category, and cameron lost his semi final by one point and then lost the 3rd / 4th place fight off by the same margin.

Overall a great day for the WCKA as well as this club.

KMA Celtic Open - Sunday 26th April 2009

A good day at the Office for Thomas Jones.  Thomas took a very strong 3rd place in the individual category, and was then entered by our Chief Instructor, Mr Clarke, into the Tag Team event with David Grady from WCKA Rhondda Fach.  They fought their way to the final where after 1 minute 20 seconds, Tom was yet to be tagged and enter the fray.  With 10 seconds to go and losing 4-1 David Tagged Tom who flew onto the mat and placed a perfect head kick to his opponent - leveling the scores at 4-4.  Thomas tagged David straight back and David completed the job with his trade mark backfist - WCKA win 5-4.  Well done to Both Thomas and David.  A great team effort from all of the WCKA Superfit Squad.

Interclub Grand Prix - 1st Event Swansea - 18th April 2009

A great day at the Grand Prix with the club's biggest entry so far.  Our Lil' Dragons team performed brilliantly as did our individual lil' Dragon.  Our Junior Fighters all fought well with everyone picking up a placing from 1st to 3rd.  Junior Team also took a third place - well done to them, but the highligh of the junior fighting was Ben Nulty's win in his section.  Well done Ben.

In the forms section, Megan Evans took 1st place in the Junior section - A fantastic effort Meg.

In the adults sections, we had several fighters in competition but the highlight of the day was Lisa Rosser winning the Continuous section in great style.

Finally the Adult team took a credible 2nd place behind Pontypridd to round an excellent day off.  Well done to everyone who competed and to all the winners whichever club they came from.

Watford Open Competition - Sunday 25th January

The first tournament of the year, and a good one for the club.  Lisa Rosser took an excellent first place, Megan Evans excelled to take 2nd place in her category, Daniel Huxtable and Mike Checker just missed out on a trophy both losing the third / forth place fight offs, and great performances came from Stuart Matuschke, Thomas Jones and Emma John in their first ever external tournaments.  Well done to the whole of the team.

Anyone viewing this website is more than welcome to come along and watch.  There will be a few demonstrations and of course awards to be handed out.  It has been an absolutely superb year for WCKA G&K with a phenomenal grading performance throughout the year, 8 Grand Champions, and many more fighting successes, none moreso than Daniel's second place at the World Championships in November.

I hope to see you all there.

Grading Success at the Supergrade - 21st December 2008

At what has become known as the Supergrade, where East meets West once a year and everyone grades in the same venue, we had an outstanding day, to top off our outstanding year at WCKA Gorseinon and Killay.

All I ever ask of my students is that they achieve a pass, and once again the students have surpassed themselves.  Of 48 people grading today, 3 had passes, 29 had a pass plus and 16, (yes 16!!!) had distinctions. An absolutely tremendous result.

I hope that all the students can make it to the final class for 2008 in Gorseinon and to the presentation day to be held in Loughor Welfare Hall on the 2nd January 2009.  Well done Team, I am proud to be your instructor.

Distinctions

Ben Nulty, Brython Caley-Davies, Luke Ward, Rhys Checker, Lauren Nulty, Kyle Davies, Thomas Jones, Jessie Rosser, Emily Ward, Ross Baglow, Emily Pennock, Mike Checker, Hatti Boulding, Lisa Rosser, Stuart Matuschke, Iza Akhtar.

Well done to everyone, not just the distinctions.

Black Belt Success

Congratulations to both Amy and Daniel Huxtable who have been awarded their First Degree Black Belt.  The formal presentation will take place at the Supergrade on December 21st.

Interclub Championship - Finals day - Merthyr  - Saturday 13th December

What a day!!!  With three guaranteed champions following the first two rounds, I was hoping that the fighting squad would deliver a couple more Grand Champions.  They didn't disappoint.  In a day of great fighting from across the whole Association, we delivered 8 winners on the day, and 8 Grand Champions.

On the day, Stuart Matuschke won the Mens points competition, Lisa Rosser won the Ladies points and continuous fighting,   In the childrens section, Thomas Jones, Emma John, Megan Evans won their respective points divisions and Dan Huxtable won both points and continuous.

Lil' Dragons Grading - Tuesday 9th December

The club welcomed Mr Daniel Parker, Head Instructor of WCKA Penlan to grade our first 4 Lil' Dragons.  All of the students performed brilliantly which resulted in 2 distinctions, one pass plus and a pass.  A fantastic performance for children so young.  I am very proud of you guys.

WKA World Championships 10th - 14th November 2008

Both Daniel and Mr Huxtable Represented Wales at this year's World Championships - this year held in Disneyland Florida, USA.  Mr Huxtable fought well but lost in the quarter final to the world champion 2-1, however Daniel fought brilliantly to fight his way through to his final where he lost to Paulo D'Oliveria from Brazil.  Well Done Daniel - Silver Medal from the World Championships.

Sunday 28th September

Another superb grading day with a further 9 distinctions, 33 with a pass plus and 1 with a pass.  A fantastic result from a fantastic class.

Sunday 13th July 2008

Grading day - suffice to say the boys (and girls!) done good.  2 passes, 24 pass  plusses and 12 distinctions - congratulations to all my students I am very proud to be your instructor.

Saturday 12th July 2008

David and Daniel travelled with a strong squad from the WCKA to fight at the ECKA NAtional Championships, Where David was hoping to defend the title he won last year.  Daniel was hoping to progress past the quarter finals where he fell last year.

Dan fought first and progressed to the final without too much trouble where he met his good friend and adversary Cobi Jones.  In a tense final, Daniel took the honours.  Congratulations to him for taking his first national title.

The junior team event then took place with Dan, Cobi and Levi Jones chosen to represent Wales.  The boys did the association and the Country proud by not only winning the title but also by winning every fight in every round on the way to victory.

Finally it was Mr Huxtable's turn to step onto the mat.  Despite feeling unwell and nearly not travelling, he fought well to beat his good friend Bob Grady in the semi final and his old adversary and all round nice bloke Steve Rhodes of ECKA in the final.  So for the second year running Mr Huxtable is National Champion, with this event last year seeing him return to competitive fighting for the first time in 12 years.

Well done to all the WCKA team - a picture has been uploaded to the gallery for all to see.

Saturday 5th July 2008

Guess who the Huxtable's met in Swansea?  Danny Ball - one half of the Britain's got talent martial arts duo STRIKE!  Too good an opportunity to pass so the photo of the Dan Amy and me is now up on the site.

Saturday 28th June 2008

A small yet select group of our members were invited to provide a martial arts demonstration at St. Hilary's church fete.  A good time was had by all and a picture of those who helped is included in the gallery.  Thanks guys.

Saturday 14th June - Interclub Tournament

Full details to follow.....

Sunday 18th May 2008

The WAKO Woesh Open was held at The Newport Centre and attracted fighters from the UK and Europe.  The two Mr Huxtable's were fighting on this occasion, with hopes that by next year a least another 5 or 6 students will be on the tournament circuit.  Dan fought first but the weight categories (as opposed to the usual height categories) which usually work in his favour certainly counted against him this time.  Dan's weight of 29.8 kgs was slightly above the lowest weight category of 28 kgs which left Dan fighting in the under 37 kgs!!!!  Some of Dan's opponents would be over a stone heavier and so he withdrew from the Continuous fighting.  In points, he fought his good friend Kyle Young a multi British Champion and World Championship bronxe medalist - this is the first time they have been in the same category and Kyle's two years and extra 15 pounds of weight proved too much so Dan had to settle for 3rd place.  Mr Huxtable senior fought well in the +34 years category, reaching the semi final and losing to the eventual winner 6-5.  Another 3rd place for the club though.  Roll on the interclub !!!!!!!!!!

Sunday 20th April 2008

KMA competition in Cwmbran.  Fighting with the WCKA Superfit squad were Mr Huxtable, Jon and Dan.  For once Dan came away without any silverware, placing 4th.  Dan's semi final was against the eventual winner and he was unlucky to lose a fight that swung both ways.  The third place fight off was a game of cat and mouse.  Dan lost the fight by a single point scored in the last three seconds off the contest.  Jon fought his first external contest and fought his fights very well, using his good legs to great effect.  An excellent result to take 2nd place, beating a black belt on his way to this placing.  Finally Mr Huxtable fought in the over 35 category and took 2nd place in a hard fought final against Huw Jenkins of the KKAW.  Well done to the three competitors.

Friday 18th April 2008

Fight night in Cwmllynfell.  Several of our fighters appeared for the first time and did well. Joel, Emma, Jessie, Katherine, Cameron, Daniel, Thomas and Jon.  Some awesome performances and £850 was rasied for the WKA welsh Team travelling to the World Championships in Florida.  I hope to have several other members of the club in the welsh team by 2009.  Well done guys!!!

Sunday 13th April 2008

Grading time!!!!  What a day!  Fantastic results.  Of the 29 gradings my pupils took, 11 had distinctions, 17 had a pass plus and one person had a pass.  Since the club started our results are 26 distinctions, 48 with a pass plus and 3 passes.  Fantastic guys, you shoud be very proud of yourselves.

On a more sombre note our thoughts are with our friend and clubmate Jordan who was run over last week and was unable to grade due to a broken foot.  Jordan we wish you a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Tuesday 1st April

Classes this week will be held in Pontybrenin and St Hilary's.  Amy queries please give me a call.

Sunday 30th March

Both Daniel and I fought at the CIMAC Superleague in Newport, and whilst we did not return with any silverware this time, we both aquitted ourselves reasonably well.  Mr Matuschke and Leanne, and Mr Quinn came up to support and saw what a high standard of competition this was.  Outside of the WAKO Britsh Open, I would think that this series of events is the toughest in the UK.

Both compertitors took part in the points categories.  Dan Lost by a single point and on another day would have progressed further, and Mr Huxtable lost to three times world champions Peter Markland 4-1.

Monday 24th March 2008 - Venues for training during Easter Holidays

Tuesday's training will be at Gorseinon Institute in Lime Street and Thursday will be in St Hilary's Church in Killay.   Any queries please call Mr Huxtable

Sunday 24th February 2008 - KMA Championship Series - Pontypool

Daniel was the only member of the club to fight and fought a fabulous series of fights to take second place in a large category fighting a thirteen year old in the final.  Our second trophy of the year.  Well done Daniel.

Sunday 17th February 2008 - WAKO British Championships - Mr Huxtable returns with a medal

Both Daniel and I have been to the WAKO British Championships over the weekend, with Dan competing in both points and light continous and myself in the points category.

Dan did extremely well, reaching the quarter finals in both disciplines, losing to World and British Champion Scott Rankin in continuous on Saturday, but certainly giving him a run for his money, and missing out in a semi final place and consequently the bronze medal by the smallest of margins and almost had the opponent disqualified as Dan had placed so much pressure on him that he had left the fighting area three times - had he been forced out one more time, Dan would have been through to set up yet another meeting with the World Champion Scott.

I fought in the +94kg category and was pleased to come away with a bronze medal.  Despite suffering a heavy defeat in the semi final to Lee Mathews of Team Top Ten, who went on to beat the world Champion Michael Page - I am delighted.

This will be my last year competing and it was pleasing to gain a placing at these prestigious championships.
